Metro and High-Speed Rail Expansions in Türkiye 2026: How Is the Transport Map Changing?

Türkiye continues to expand its rail transportation network throughout 2026 with new metro and high-speed train projects designed to reduce travel times and improve connectivity between cities, airports, residential districts, and commercial centers.

The impact of these projects goes beyond easier transportation. Improved infrastructure can also increase the attractiveness of areas located near new railway and metro connections.

Istanbul Expands Its Metro Network

Istanbul has witnessed several important metro developments in 2026. One of the most significant was the completion of the Gayrettepe–Istanbul Airport–Halkalı corridor following the opening of the Halkalı–Arnavutköy section.

The completed route provides a direct connection between western Istanbul, Istanbul Airport, and other central areas, with a total length of approximately 69 kilometers.

Another important development was the extension of the M5 Üsküdar–Sultanbeyli Metro Line, strengthening metro access to major residential districts on Istanbul’s Asian side.

Construction also continues on the Ümraniye–Ataşehir–Göztepe Metro Line, which has reached an advanced stage and is expected to further improve transportation across the Asian side of the city.

Bursa Moves Closer to the High-Speed Rail Network

One of the key transportation projects in 2026 is the Bandırma–Bursa–Yenişehir–Osmaneli High-Speed Railway.

The Bursa–Osmaneli section is expected to connect Bursa directly to Türkiye’s national high-speed rail network.

Once operational, the project is expected to significantly reduce travel times between Bursa, Istanbul, and Ankara, strengthening Bursa’s position as one of the most important cities in the Marmara Region.

Halkalı–Kapıkule Strengthens Türkiye’s Connection with Europe

The Halkalı–Kapıkule Railway Project is one of Türkiye’s most strategic railway investments, connecting Istanbul with the European border.

The full project extends for approximately 229 kilometers, while the Çerkezköy–Kapıkule section entered testing stages during 2026.

Once the entire route is completed, passenger travel time between Halkalı and Kapıkule is expected to fall from around four hours to approximately 90 minutes.

The project is also important for freight transportation and Türkiye’s railway connections with European markets.

Ankara Plans a Metro Connection to Esenboğa Airport

Ankara is also moving forward with plans for a metro line connecting the High-Speed Train Station (YHT Gar) with Esenboğa Airport.

The planned route will be around 36 kilometers long with 12 stations, providing a direct connection between the high-speed railway network, the airport, and northern districts of the capital.

This project could significantly improve public transportation accessibility for both residents and visitors.

What Do These Projects Mean for Real Estate?

Metro and railway projects can change the perception of distance within and between cities. Areas that once seemed far from airports, commercial districts, or city centers can become significantly more accessible after the opening of new transportation links.

For real estate investors, transportation infrastructure and accessibility are important factors when evaluating a location.

However, proximity to a metro or railway station alone does not guarantee an increase in property value. Project quality, surrounding infrastructure, local services, supply, and demand should also be considered before making an investment decision.

Türkiye Is Moving Toward a More Integrated Transport Network

Transportation projects in 2026 show a clear move toward greater integration between metro systems, high-speed trains, airports, and suburban railway networks.

As new lines begin operating and additional projects continue toward 2028 and beyond, accessibility and transportation infrastructure are expected to play an increasingly important role in residential and real estate investment decisions across Türkiye.
